An early morning fire within a Glasgow hospital forced five patients from their rooms. 

A blaze within a room of 6C of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital saw fire crews race to the Govan site. 

A total of five fire engines reportedly attended the incident just before 6.30am on Tuesday, which is said to have been started deliberately by a patient in their room.

Five people had been moved temporarily as a result but were expected to be returned by around 4pm on Tuesday. 

Despite the inconvenience, no casualties were reported as a result of the fire. 

A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "Thanks to the quick reaction of our staff a fire started deliberately by a patient in their room at the QEUH was quickly extinguished.

"The fire service was called to ensure the area was safe but as a precautionary measure we have temporarily moved five patients while our estates staff assess the damage.

"We expect these patients to be returned later today."

A spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 6.29am on Tuesday, June 18 to reports of a fire within the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of fire engines including a height appliance to the scene where firefighters extinguished the flames. 

“There were no casualties. Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
