A warning has been issued to Scots travelling to Benidorm following reports that gangs are spiking British tourists' drinks - to rob them once they have passed out.

The Sun reports that one tourist, who was targeted in a bar, awoke on a beach without his trainers, phone and wallet.

It is claimed that those behind the con pose as holidaymakers in the resort's bustling nightlife. It is understood that they slip date-rape-style drugs before they carry out the theft.

Local expats are behind the warning, which circulated on the social media website Facebook.

One post read: "This happened to a guy. His friends reported him missing. He had been spiked. Trainers, phone and wallet missing. He was found on the beach.

"Please be careful...don't leave your drinks unattended."

The page also warned that drunk tourists were being preyed on by pickpockets posing as sex workers.

Cops are, however, closing in on those responsible.

A Romanian woman was arrested for stealing £400 for a UK tourist and another for pinching a £5,000 watch from an elderly man.

Tourists were also urged to look after their belongings when they arrive in the resort. It is claimed wallets, purses, passports and even luggage is being taken as soon as tourists step off airport buses outside hotels.
