Street Play is an initiative run by Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life that allows communities to close local roads free-of-charge so children can play safely outside close to their homes.

It aims to bring communities closer together by providing local groups and residents the opportunity to take back their streets and enjoy a traffic free environment.

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, is fully behind the scheme.

Glasgow Times:

Councillor Richardson said: “Street Play is all about creating safe places for children to play in their communities. With cars and other vehicles put in the back seat for a day, there’s real feeling of freedom for the children. Street Play creates a fun and relaxed environment for children and parents alike and helps to bring all the members of a community closer together."

“There’s so much enjoyment parents take from watching their children run around without a care in the world or riding a bike for the first time. The great thing is that if you need anything then you can just nip back inside the house!”

Glasgow Times:

Street Play is an initiative that is open to residents and not-for-profit local organisations (such as community groups, schools, housing associations).

In 2019 Street Play was made available over 4 weekends and there are still two weekends left when you can stage your own street play session - 19-21 July and 20-22 September.

The deadline for applications for July 19-21 is July 1 (so best be quick!) with the deadline for September 20-22 set as September 1.

You can pick any of these dates that suit you or your organisation and there’s no barrier to applying for Street Play on both of these dates.

Applications are being sought that are about getting children active, playing games and having fun with their friends. The organisers are happy to accept applications that will see members of the community set up stalls to provide refreshments for everyone to enjoy.

Street Play is intended for residential streets and applications that will affect major roads, such as those used for bus routes, will not be accepted.

All associated council costs are provided free of charge such as the legal order to close your street and also all the traffic management equipment needed to close your street safely.  The organisers will also cover the cost of the insurance policy that will keep you protected in case of any accidents.
