A MAN has appeared in court after firearms were discovered in East Kilbride.

Acting on intelligence, the Organised Crime Partnership (OCP), along with local officers, carried out searches of properties on Wingate Drive on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.

During the course of the investigation, officers seized nine firearms and a quantity of ammunition.

A 62-year-old man was arrested and appeared in Hamilton Sheriff Court on Thursday, June 20, 2019. He was remanded in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Naysmith of the OCP said: “Our operation has now recovered over 20 firearms across Scotland since September 2018 and we will continue in our efforts to take dangerous weapons off our streets.

"Working with our partners across the UK and abroad to proactively target those who attempt to jeopardise the safety of our communities will continue to be treated as a top priority.”

NCA Scotland operations manager John McGowan added: “Taking firearms off the streets makes those streets safer, and results like this demonstrate the value of the NCA and Police Scotland working together.

"Unlawful possession and use of firearms represent a significant threat to our communities, but through the OCP we are continuing to actively target those involved to protect the people of Scotland."
