A Glasgow racing team have dedicated their latest win to a young rider fighting brain injuries in hospital after a horror accident.

Sam Norris, 15, from Reading, was placed on life support after the accident during a race at Peugeot Ashfield Stadium last week.

The British Youth Championships in north Glasgow were cancelled following the crash in heat 23 of the competition.

He remains in the paediatric intensive care unit in Glasgow, where he opened his eyes for the first time on Wednesday.

The Glasgow Tigers have now fought off stiff competition from the Somerset Rebels and dedicated their win to the young rider.

They emerged 48-42 winners, meaning that although the Somerset men took a league point home, Glasgow retained their record and added three points to their Championship tally.

Kyle Bickley, the Tigers' rider of the night, said the side had been keen to win the meeting in Sam's honour.

Bickley said: "He was super unlucky to have the nasty accident. I was actually at the meeting and saw it happen - it's never nice seeing another rider getting injured.

"Our thoughts go out to him and his family and we hope he recovers soon and well.

"We had a collection tonight and it looks like we've raised a bit of money for him, so hopefully that helps - it's the least we can do."

Team boss Cami Brown added: "We wanted to win this for Sam and everything we did tonight was for him. We'd like to dedicate this win to Sam."

Members of the team thereafter paid a visit to Sam, whose parents, Claire and Chris, later posted an update to the rider's Facebook page.

They wrote: "Sam had a better night after being given drugs to suppress the seizures.

"He has been quite restless today but we are told this normal and he has to ride out the storm as the Neurosurgeon described it.

"Sam had a pleasant surprise with a visit from Glasgow Tigers Craig Cook accompanied by Tigers Peter Facenna.

"Big thank you to them for making the effort to come and visit Sam and for the bag of goodies which I'm sure Sam will enjoy wearing."
