A LATE-NIGHT bowling alley is set to open in Glasgow after licensing chiefs gave it the green light.

Bowlarama, which will be based at 20 Glassford Street, has been granted a licence to sell alcohol by Glasgow City Council.

A £400,000 investment will see a revamp of the former Tiger Tiger club, with ten-pin bowling lanes installed.

The venue’s representative told the Council’s licensing committee the venture was due to a “change in social trends”.

He said although Glasgow had a high standard of nightclubs, the industry is in decline, adding: “Young people are looking for something different.”

Bowlarama will be open between 11am and 3am, offering food, drinks and bowling as well as DJs and club nights. It will also cater to corporate nights out.

A decision on the licence was delayed last month, when councillors requested a site visit. Councillor Margaret Morgan said bowling in a night club didn’t “rest easy” with her.

However, the club’s representative said there would be a guard rail between the bowling lane and the dancefloor.

“Not that bowling balls have great aerodynamic characteristics,” he added. “I think you’d have to be a shot putter.”

He said the concept was “new to Glasgow but far from unique”, claiming young people were looking for more from venues as the rise of dating websites and social media mean they’re no longer see nightclubs as a “chance for romance”.

A “counterculture is emerging” which includes a resurgence in the popularity of bowling, the representative said. “This is really a case where there is so much to like.”
