Tributes have poured in after cops revealed a serving Police Scotland dog has died following a cancer battle.

Poorly pooch Vinnie died today at just seven years old.

The brave canine had been battling cancer and served as a police dog from April, 2013.

In a statement Police Scotland said: "Today we said goodbye to our friend serving police dog Vinnie.

"Vinnie was recently diagnosed with inoperable cancer and today he bravely lost his battle.

"Vinnie was a fantastic police dog serving from April 2013 and was seven years old.

"Our thoughts are with his handler & family."

Tributes poured in for the German Shephard on social media. 

One woman said: "What a shame, not very old. What a beauty."

Another added: "RIP Vinnie. Condolences to your handler and family. Run pain free forever. 

Another said: "So sorry. He was an amazing dog. RIP gorgeous, you will be missed."

General purpose dogs, usually German Shepherds, help track down criminals.
