OVER £8,000 has been raised for the family of a young racer who is fighting brain injuries in hospital after a horror accident.

Speedway star Sam Norris, 15, from Reading, was placed on life support after an accident during a race at Peugeot Ashfield Stadium.

The British Youth Championships in North Glasgow were cancelled following the crash in heat 23 of the competition.

Sam remains in the paediatric intensive care unit in Glasgow where he opened his eyes for the first time last Wednesday.

His family was initially aiming to raise £3,000 but have smashed their target to reach close to £8,500.

A previous statement on his official Facebook page read: “Sam is at paediatric intensive care unit in Glasgow.

“He has a serious brain injury. The staff are observing his condition.

“He’s on life support. Thanks to all concerned and please pray for him to get well.”

His mum Claire, who flew to Glasgow to be by his side, previously added: “Sam is stable at the moment, we don’t know how it will go, forever optimistic though.
