GLASGOW needs and deserves a top class civic square.

George Square has been at the heart of the city in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and has changed in that time as the city grew.
It is now time to bring the square into the 21st century.
City centres are changing with new patterns of commerce and shopping and they must adapt to be quality places where people want to spend time.
To do that Glasgow city centre needs to be more people friendly, where we can all move about freely.
Cars can still be allowed on the periphery to get to the many car parks and big shopping centres but from there those of us who are able enough can walk.
When the council comes to consider the responses it gets back from the people for what the purpose of the square should be, in order for it to be a flexible, modern civic space it should be free of cars and traffic.
Buchanan Street is the city’s success story. More traffic free streets and spaces in the city centre, linking St Enoch Square with Nelson Mandela Place and Royal Exchange Square can create vibrant outdoor culture.
And right at its heart a traffic free George Square.
We must improve the city’s air quality and the streets as a destination.
The Evening Times believes that George Square should be given over to people in its entirety.
It is time for a traffic free George Square.
