Consultant anaesthetist Dr John Davidson told the High Court in Glasgow how the masked raiders threatened to chop off his head during the robbery at his Kittochside House property in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire in April 2018.

He was slashed with a machete while his teacher wife Caroline and son Gavin, 27, were terrorised.

The robbers stole the family's £70,000 Range Rover, a £4,000 diamond ring and a £2,000 Rolex watch.

Jailing the pair Judge Johanna Johnston told them: “This was an appalling and brutal crime. It is hard to imagine a more traumatic ordeal for the Davidson family. Your criminal actions have had a devastating effect on them. Mrs Davidson is now fearful and anxious and was unable to return to work for many months.”

Judge Johnston ordered McInnes to be jailed for eight years and monitored for four years after his release. McCluskey was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison and ordered to be monitored for two and a half years.

At the time of the robbery, McInnes was out on licence from an attempted murder conviction and McCluskey was on a supervised release order.

McInnes, through his defence counsel Frances Connor, said he became involved because he owed a £500 debt.

Miss Connor said: “He was told they were going to the house to collect a debt which was owed. There was no intention to harm anyone.”

Solicitor advocate Rhonda Anderson, representing McCluskey, said: “He continues to deny his guilt.”

Dr Davidson and his wife were in court to see the pair sentenced.
