STEVEN DAVIS saw his first campaign back at Ibrox come to an end just as he and Rangers were getting up to full speed in the Premiership. Now the Northern Irishman is determined to pick up where he left off as Steven Gerrard’s side look to mount a challenge for the top flight crown.

Davis returned to Glasgow on a loan deal from Southampton in January. He would finish the term in impressive form before missing out on the final game of the campaign as Gerrard’s side lost to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

And the 34-year-old is pleased to be back down to business after joining up with the Gers squad in Portugal following his international involvement against Estonia and Belarus.

Davis said: “I got here Sunday, started training on Monday. I got a little break before the internationals and got a bit of time off afterwards.

“Maybe at my age it’s good not to have too long a break. It’s nice to be back in amongst the boys and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.

“Pre-season definitely doesn’t get any easier. Joining the club, the boys said it was notorious and it was going to be quite difficult.

“That’s the way it has proved to be so far, but you need to get the work in. It’s going to be a long season but hopefully we can be successful.

“It was disappointing that the season finished at that time. The team was playing good football and I was enjoying playing in the side as well.

“I was disappointed to pick up the injury against Celtic, which meant I missed the last game of the season, but it was good to get away to the internationals and get another couple of games under my belt. Hopefully I can build on them.”
