Volunteers at a Glasgow football club have been left devastated after thousands of pounds worth of equipment was stolen on Saturday.

An order of brand new kits for Sons of Struth Football Academy had just been delivered to the club in Knightswood on Friday - and less than 24 hours later, it was gone.

Thieves targeted a car holding the boxes of new equipment, and now volunteers are desperate to see their stolen items returned.

"It was the first time we were going to have a stock," founder and chairman of the academy, Craig Houston, told The Evening Times. "When a new kid joins, we could have given them a kit.

"It's so disappointing. We just want them returned."

The academy sees 150 boys and girls participating across ages 2-13, and works with Rangers Soccer Schools and receives support from current and former Rangers stars.

Until Friday, kids enrolling in the club had to wait four weeks to have a kit to call their own.

But for the first time, young players would have the chance to wear the official kit as soon as they joined after volunteers were finally able to buy in stock, just in time for the summer holidays.

The kits stolen include white training tops, blue shorts and blue half-zip jumpers all branded with the academy's sign and an Adidas logo.

Adult kits destined to be sold to raise money for new video equipment were also stolen from the club.

Young players and volunteers have been focusing their efforts on raising money to purchase remote analysis equipment, which allows football clubs to record and study matches and training sessions.

It was expected to add a new dimension to youngsters' experience, but Saturday morning's setback means it will be harder to achieve.
