Sunday parking charges came into force in Glasgow city centre for the first time but were not enforced.

Charges of £1 for 15 minutes were in place and new restrictions imposed, meaning no parking was allowed on single yellow lines.

New signs were put up warning drivers that there was no parking on the single yellows from Monday to Sunday until 6pm and new notices on parking meters with the charges displayed.

Glasgow city centre was busy with cars on the first day of the new charges but no one was given a fine if they failed to pay or parked illegally under the new rules.

The council said warning notices were issued instead for the first week only.

Parking attendants could be seen fixing warning notices to car windscreens warning they will be issued with a penalty notice next time.

On Renfield Street a row of cars were parked on a single yellow line despite a new sign being in place.

Others paid to park with many cars showing their pay and display ticket on their windscreen.

Lewis Cheyne, from Glasgow, parked in Renfield Street and paid for a ticket at a machine.

He said: “It’s always been free on a Sunday. It didn’t need to change.

“It is very expensive so one day a week where it is free would be good. The council gets enough income every other day.”

Warning notices could be seen on cars all around the city centre, mostly on cars parked on the single yellow lines.
