A SKY bar could be opened on the roof of a shopping centre on one of Glasgow's busiest shopping streets.

The Restaurant Bar and Grill at Princes Square, on Buchanan Street, has applied to Glasgow City Council to build an extension which would include bar and dining areas and a kitchen with a pizza oven.

Plans state the company aims to "create an unrivalled destination sky bar dining and lounge area on the rooftop of the Princes Square shopping centre".

It "will deliver an iconic sky bar to Glasgow city centre, create new jobs and enhance the existing Restaurant Bar and Grill facility, as well as help support and sustain Princes Square and the surrounding area," the planning report adds.

Princes Square is a category B listed building in the city's central conservation area and the restaurant is within the glasshouse extension to the rear north-eastern corner of the centre.

The applicant's agent - North Planning and Development Ltd - say although the glasshouse is attached to Princes Square "as a modern addition it does not form part of the listing and so listed building permission is not required".

Their proposal states the bar would have seats for around 100 guests and the design would respect the period, style and architectural character of the building.

"The proposed extension incorporates a retractable awning, which when open will enable patrons to enjoy outside dining," the planning report states.

"The sky bar represents a very significant financial investment and it will make a significant contribution to enhancing Glasgow city centre as the primary location for retail, employment, leisure, tourism, and evening economy uses.

"It will operate throughout the day and into the evening, thereby enhancing the night time economy within the area, further contributing to the vitality and viability of the city centre.

"The proposal will complement the city centre's retail offer and generate new additional employment opportunities."

The other option is a "glowing beacon" with "a contrasting yet complimenting element to the existing shell".

Customer stairs and a lift, as well as emergency exit stairs, would be included.
