CLACKMANNANSHIRE Council’s Sports Development hosted the Secondary Athletics Championships at Lornshill Academy recently with over 400 pupils taking part.

The weather was kind on proceedings as the school hosted the final event of the school year with everyone in high spirits and determined to take the bragging rights into the summer holidays.

This competition is an opportunity for all secondary pupils to come together and compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in various athletic events. Pupils got the chance to compete in the following track events, 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m and 4x100m relay. Alongside this they got to compete in four different field events including long & standing jump, javelin and turbo javelin, shot putt and high jump.

The hard work and practice all the athletes had put in at their clubs and PE lessons was evident to see in their performances with several records broke on the day. In the slippery but humid conditions it was very impressive that six records in total were broken which is a huge testament to the pupils’ ability.

A special mention to the new record set in the S1 girls shot putt event as the previous record had been set in 2007 and on the day both the runner up – Katie Simm and the eventual winner Chloe Crockford both, Alva Academy, threw further than the previous record of 8.42.

Alva were looking to retain their title but Lornshill and Alloa were not going to let this happen easily and the results were very close in the end.

It was, however, Alva who managed to retain their title with a grand total of 556 points. Lornshill Academy claimed second with 523 points and Alloa followed in third with 458 points.
