STEVEN GERRARD reckons Sheyi Ojo has got all the attributes to make a name for himself at Rangers after he marked his competitive debut with a goal against St Joseph’s.

The winger penned a season-long loan deal as he moved from Liverpool last month and has wasted little time in making a positive impression at Ibrox.

He produced an eye-catching performance in Gibraltar on Tuesday night as Gerrard’s side earned a 4-0 victory that all-but secures their place in the Europa League second qualifying round.

Ojo capped a fine individual showing with a lovely goal as he curled the ball in from the edge of the area and Gerrard is confident there is plenty more to come as he looks to build on previous loan spells at Wigan, Wolverhampton, Fulham and Reims.

Gerrard said: “Listen, Sheyi has got all the attributes and if this doesn’t work it will be because of Sheyi. He has got everything in the locker - he is quick, he is strong, he is powerful, he takes on information.

“From a manager’s point of view, you know he is going to take on the tactical information, you see him chasing back and making fouls and getting yellow cards.

“He knows that he needs to make this work. He is delighted to be here, he has settled in well and the fans are having him. Now he has got to build on that.

“Towards the end, I could see him coming down slightly. I want him to be ruthless from start to finish and he will get the numbers that he wants and that will satisfy everyone.”

Gerrard handed debuts to Ojo, Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart and Joe Aribo in Gibraltar as Rangers eased to a comfortable first leg win.

And the Ibrox boss is pleased with the progress that his side have made during the opening weeks of the new campaign.

Gerrard said: “If you take it back 12 months, you have to consider were weren’t match fit when we went to face Shkupi.

“We’re still not match fit so everything is against us - the conditions, the pitch, we’re not match fit, so it can be tricky at times and in the first half we did try to force it at times but we showed a great attitude and professionalism throughout.

“We backed ourselves the goals would come when we showed the patience. We’re a lot further forward than we were 12 months ago.

“Back then we came in and took over a job and there were a lot of things that needed to change and a lot of information we had to get to the players and it was going to take time to get the tactics across.

“The advantage guys such as Sheyi, Greg Stewart and Jordan Jones have now is they’ve come into a team that has been together for a year and we know how we want to play so it’s a lot easier for them to pick up.

“At the start of last season, we had 23 players and everything was new to every one of them. We are a lot further forward than we were.”

Rangers will head into the second leg at Ibrox in a commanding position as they await the winner of the tie between Cork City and Progres Niederkorn.

Gerrard dismissed talk of a potential move for Ivorian defender Simon Deli but hopes he is closing in on an eighth summer signing this week.

He said: “There is something imminent in that position, but it is not the guy that you are talking about.

“There is still a way to go but we have had some progress in the last couple of days. If things progress as they have in the last 48 hours, I’m hoping something will get done by the end of the week.”
