The Canaries have long been one of Scotland's favourite holiday destinations.

Now it turns our love of the sun-kissed Spanish islands is requited.

Local media is describing Scotland - along with Turkey - as the most in-demand place for Canarians to spend this summer.

Tourism has been booming in Scotland for some years - not least from mainland Europeans trying to get away from increasingly insufferable heat waves.

But the Canary Islands -  such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote - rarely get too hot thanks to their maritime climate. While their location, off the west coast of north africa, means they enjoy year-round sunshine.

Local newspaper Canarias7, citing travel agents, said Scotland and Turkey were the "most in-demand" destinations this season. Though it also said the most popular home destination for Canarians was Fuerteventura, one of the wildest islands on the archipelago.

Some Canarians will feel very much at home when they get to Scotland: Tenerife's flag is a white saltire on a dark blue backgrround.
