A WEEKEND of summer fun has kicked off in Glasgow with the city’s TRNSMT festival now underway.

Thousands of revellers descended on Glasgow Green on Friday to soak up music from chart-topping acts including Stormzy, Gerry Cinnamon and Years and Years.

With glitter-adorned faces, on-trend space buns and lots of festival fashion, music fans were not only dressed for the occasion but looking forward to a weekend of music from some of the best live acts around.

And with 50,000 punters due to descend on Glasgow Green this weekend, Police Scotland’s operation was also underway in and outside the festival.

Officers could be seen speaking to revellers who had consumed too much alcohol. There was a handful of arrests for minor disorder offences.

Security was tight around the perimeter of the Glasgow Green to prevent anyone from getting in without a ticket.

After a couple of big-name cancellations in the run-up to the event, and criticism about the lack of female artists leading to the emergence of the Queen Tut’s stage, festival-goers seemed to be lapping up the performances.

Jess Glynne had been due to appear on the final day of the three-day festival, but it was one of a series of gigs she cancelled earlier this month due to a vocal haemorrhage. Emeli Sande has been drafted in as a replacement.

Singer-songwriter Glynne said doctors have warned her she could damage her voice permanently if she does not take time off.

Lewis Capaldi stepped in to replace Snow Patrol when two of the band were hit by medical problems.

Crowds basked in the sunshine at the TRNSMT festival got underway with temperatures topping 20C (68F), and organisers urged those attending to use suncream and stay hydrated.

Festival director Geoff Ellis said: “Stormzy had a great Glastonbury and he only wanted to do two festivals this year. When we got the call, pretty much a year ago, saying he wants to do Glastonbury and TRNSMT, that’s really cool to get.

“He played the first year here and had a fantastic gig, went on about 4pm and had a full crowd watching him and that was great. I certainly won’t be missing him.”

Mr Ellis also addressed speculation about the future of the T In The Park festival, which he organised before it was put on hold in 2016, telling the BBC the much-loved event has “run its course”, adding “it’s all about TRNSMT for us now”.

Also planning to catch Stormzy is the headliner of the women-only Queen Tut’s stage, Lauren Spiteri.

Niece of Texas star Sharleen Spiteri, she said she is “proud” to be on the stage dedicated to up and coming female artists, featuring at the festival for the first time in an attempt to address the gender play gap. She said: “I’m just excited to be part of it, I think it’s really nice that TRNSMT are celebrating women in music that may be overlooked and that are just doing it on their own and I’m very proud to be sharing a stage with these amazing women.”

Glaswegian and Scottish pride was the theme of yesterday with Saltires flying throughout sets while one festival-goer even donned a traffic cone hat on his head in the style of the famous Duke of Wellington statue in Royal Exchange Square.

Most of those attending couldn’t wait to soak up the atmosphere especially and around 130 people had been treated for minor ailments mostly related to the sun.

Temperatures for most of TRNSMT weekend were predicted to stay in the 20s and the warm weather ensured the carnival atmosphere continued throughout the day.

Today more artists will take to the stage with Catfish and the Bottlemen headlining. Other acts expected to draw in the crowds include Bastille, Richard Ashcroft and DMA’s.

The Glasgow Green festival is also packed with alternative stages with DJs spinning top dancefloor anthems and new female talent is given a platform at Queen Tut’s Stage.

Tomorrow pop-anthem hitmaker George Ezra will close the sold-out Sunday festival but all eyes will be on Scottish chart-topper Lewis Capaldi who has been at the centre of a spat with Noel Gallagher.

Bruises star Lewis previously took a dig at the Oasis star during Glastonbury last month when he dressed in a Britpop inspired parka and bucket hat.

Will he throw another punch into the feud when he takes to the stage at TRNSMT on Sunday?
