A GLASGOW restaurant is the only Scottish establishment in line for a £25,000 makeover courtesy of food delivery company Deliveroo.

Over 500 restaurants across the UK applied to land the top prize with a panel of external judges whittling down the applications to a shortlist of six businesses from around the country.

Among the shortlist is West End-based chippy Mario’s Plaice on Byres Road.

The family-run business is a hit with locals and visitors to the area as it serves up traditional fish suppers along with Scots specialities deep-fried Mars Bars and half pizzas.

The restaurant owner Mario’s son, Santino, described what he and his family would do with the money if they come out on top.

He said: “If we won the Deliveroo restaurant makeover competition, we’d change our frying range into a bigger and more efficient one. We could put down our delivery time a lot more and produce the food a lot faster.

“Also, we'd like to maybe make our restaurant space bigger. We’d probably try and put in a mezzanine, which would give us more seats and also obviously allow more customers in our restaurant.”

Patrick Grady, SNP MP for Glasgow North, described Mario’s Plaice as “an institution in Glasgow’s West End.” He added: “You’re always guaranteed a warm welcome and their famous fish tea is legendary.

“I find it a great place for a cuppa and a bacon roll after a busy morning surgery at the library across the road, and it’s kept many members of my campaign team well sustained on election days in recent years.

“The option of ordering for home delivery no doubt makes it even more popular with residents across the area. It’s great to see Mario’s nominated for this award which is a real recognition of their contribution to the local community and economy.”

Deliveroo is now calling on the public to help make the final decision by giving food fans the power to vote for the restaurant they believe should win the restaurant makeover competition.

“Please vote for Mario’s Plaice,” Santino urged readers.

Deliveroo’s restaurant makeover project was launched to support independent restaurants and the struggling British high street.
