KILMARNOCK have launched an investigation after a roof covering disabled fans at Rugby Park collapsed as Rangers fans celebrated their winning goal, leaving one man injured.
The goal in the 91st minute by Connor Goldson saw Rangers start this year's season with a 2-1 win - and sparked a pitch invasion, with fans taken back to their seats by police and stewards.
But supporters then had to be taken out of the area where disabled fans were seated when it emerged it had caved in.
TV footage appeared to show three fans climbing on to the disabled fans' shelter, which collapsed as the jubilant fans jumped up and down in the wake of the winning goal.
Following the game, Police Scotland revealed that four men were arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace, while one man was injured and needed treatment following the collapse of the roof during the stoppage-time celebrations.
A spokeswoman for the force said: "An investigation is under way following a pitch incursion at the Kilmarnock versus Rangers match on Sunday 4 August 2019.
"The incident resulted in the roof of a shelter collapsing and one man being injured. He received medical treatment at the ground and our enquiries are ongoing.
"Four men were arrested in connection with breaching the peace."
It comes after supporters had already taken to social media to express dismay as they were unable to get into Rugby Park in time for the match starting due to issues with electronic turnstiles.
Pictures posted online show hundreds of fans crowded together after the game had started.
One fan tweeted: "Shambles at Kilmarnock still nowhere near in the ground after kick off, seen better entrances at Sunday league games."
Police Scotland confirmed they assisted Kilmarnock officials and that all away supporters were in the ground 15 minutes after kick-off.
Speaking after the match, former Rangers and Kilmarnock footballer, Kris Boyd said of the shelter’s collapse: "Everybody jumping up and down on top of things, there was a couple of guys beneath us here as well. It's something that does need to be sorted.
"I said it last season as well, when you see scenes like this.
"When you take into consideration, yes, it's a relief that you score the goal.
"Fine, fair enough. But don't be jumping on the pitch and as I said are we going to wait until someone's seriously hurt before we act on it?
"There's no need for it. Yes, celebrate your goal but don't go over the top."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
