OUR list of great Glaswegians just got even greater!

Thanks to the huge popularity of our quest to find the Greatest Glaswegian of all time, we have decided to extend it.

Our readers have told us that a list of 50 inspirational men and women is just not enough to do justice to the incredible people our city has produced.

Your suggestions of worthy contenders, from medical heroes and musical giants to ingenious inventors and amazing architects, have poured in.

As our readers rightly pointed out, many local heroes have made Glasgow their own, or are deeply connected with the city, even though they were born elsewhere.

This time, therefore, we will be stepping outside the strict ‘born in Glasgow’ guideline – because, as everyone knows, Glasgow’s welcome as the friendly city is second to

none.

Once we have revealed the next 50, we will open the public vote to find the greatest Glaswegian of all time. So far, the names on our list have included great entertainers, such as Billy Connolly, Lulu and comedian Stanley Baxter; inspirational entrepreneurs and charity champions such as Sir Thomas Lipton and Dr Margo Whiteford; suffragettes like Agnes Dollan and Helen Crawfurd, women who blazed a trail for the generations who came after them; and even a few fictional characters, who have nevertheless helped to explain and celebrate our city, warts and all, across the globe, including Still Game’s Jack and Victor; Govan philosopher Rab C Nesbitt and Calton Creek sheriff Lobey Dosser.

Keep your suggestions coming, and stay tuned as we reveal the next 50 names in the running.
