PUPILS at Govan High School gathered on results day to find out their grades and pick up their certificates.

For some, their hopes of studying at university depended on their Highers performance and others hoped to progress from national 5 to Highers.

Parents waited anxiously and looked on as envelopes were excitedly ripped open and results revealed at last.

Rachel Thomson was there with her family to get her Higher results.

Her certificate showed her five Highers were passed with five As leading to a beaming smile.

The bright pupil is on course to achieve her aim of a place at university.

She said: “I am really proud of my results. I‘m coming back to school to do Advanced Higher maths, chemistry and history then I want to apply to as many universities as I can.

“I want to study economics”

Rachel has a place at the Cambridge University Summer School this year and last year was at Oxford.

She said: “I was the only person form Glasgow on the course but I really felt part of it. It was really diverse.”

Rachel’s parents were at the school to see their daughter open her results.

Dad, Stuart, said: “We are so proud. She has worked really hard for this.”

Mum, Linda, said: “She has given up so many other things to concentrate on her studies. She worked very hard.”

Lauren McArthur opened her envelop to discover she passed the three higher she sat this year, with an A in Music, a B in Geography and a C in English.

She now has seven highers and has the grades to take up a place a Glasgow University to study medicine.

She said: “I needed two Cs and one B this year for my conditional offer.

She said: “I was surprised when I opened the envelope. “I’m going to study medicine at Glasgow University.

She said: “I’ve always wanted to go to university but changed my mind about what I wanted to study. I thought I wanted to be a vet but then I didn’t want to have to put down dogs” she laughed.

She added: “I’ve always been interested in science subjects.”

Mark Docherty was waiting for his National 5 results.

He achieved two As, four Bs and once C in his seven subjects.

He said: “It was a relief. It’s been a long wait for the results. I thought I would have done a bit better but it’s ok.

“I’m now coming back in fifth year to do five highers. I want to study law. I did work experience at a law firm and I decided that is what I want to do.”

John Macdonald was also waiting for National 5 results. He is also now looking to the future.

He earned an impressive five As and two Bs.

He said: “I felt relieved when I saw the results. I got what I had hoped for.

“I want to get my highers now and go to either Strathclyde or Glasgow University. I want to study aerospace or aeronautical engineering. I’ve always been into physics.”

Nancy Belford, Govan High Headteacher was waiting with the pupils as they learned their results.

Mrs Belford said the school was improving with an ethos of attainment and equal value instilled in students from the day they start.

She said: “I’m really pleased with he results. We have improved performance over the last few yeas and we have sustained that.

This year 7.6% of pupils got five highers.

“Right from S1 it is all about attainment and achievement throughout the school.

“It is planted in their minds. We have got high aspirations for all of our young people.

“The staff are committed and go above and beyond making them aware of the variety of pathways. “It is great to see an increase in those going to university but we value all destinations and have a high percentage going into apprenticeships and further education.

“We focus on the wider achievements.

“We offer the full range of Highers and have a parity of esteem for academic and vocations.

“We cater for all our young people whether they want to go to university or into the workforce, we will support them to get there.”
