A derelict Glasgow primary school is to be demolished after it was ravaged by a fire on Monday.

Police are treating the blaze at the former Yoker Primary School on Craggan Drive as suspicious.

Glasgow City Council has now confirmed that the building will now be demolished 'as soon as possible'.

They say full-time security at the site is in place, and they are to see to the emergency demolition of the fire immediately.

The works are expected to take around three weeks.

Councillor Michael Cullen said: "The former Yoker Primary site has planned redevelopment with a local community housing association, but the current demolition is due to an incident of fire-raising this week.

"Actions like this place not just local residents at risk but also our emergency services partners.

"This incident also places further financial liability on Glasgow City Council as we are having to do the demolition in a time when budgets are getting tighter and actions like this have a direct impact on our community."

We reported on Monday that black smoke could be seen from across the city as firefighters desperately tried to keep the flames under control.

One nearby resident told The Evening Times: "I smelt burning, and then saw smoke passing by my living room window. I thought it was a barbecue at first, but then the room got really dark.

"I ran to the window and there was a massive black cloud covering the house.

"The school's isolated, but firefighters closed off part of the road."
