Glasgow's health board has launched an investigation after an elderly patient was "viciously attacked" by a patient who was required to have enhanced monitoring at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The victim is said to have suffered broken ribs during the attack.

The incident happened in ward 56 which treats stroke patients on Thursday at around 1am. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said staff "responded quickly" and police were alerted.

The board is also carrying out its own investigations.

It is understood the patient who carried out the attack had an adult-with incapacity notice (AWI) which means "enhanced observation" is required.

A source told the Evening Times: "This is an extra staff member specifically on duty to observe and monitor the patient. Despite this, the assault still happened."

A spokesman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “Staff responded quickly to an incident yesterday and supported the immediate needs of the patients.

“The incident is being investigated and was also reported to the Police. Families are being kept informed.”
