A CASTLEMILK business owner has paid the ultimate tribute to local hero Gerry Cinnamon - by naming her takeaway after his hit song Canter.

Vena Jaconelli will open new business Canter next week after her son Geo Semple convinced her the unusual name was the right choice for the eatery.

Vena, who is related to the same family of Maryhill's famous Jaconelli cafe, was nervous about her first venture and to ease her worries, her son found himself constantly using the word Canter which means easy.

The hit single also came on the radio while the family was working on the takeaway - giving them another sign it was the right name.

Geo explained: "It was just one of those moments where we went, that is what it's called, Canter.

"It also works because Gerry is from Castlemilk as well."

He added: "Everyone is dying to try it, asking for menus and wondering when it is opening. There is quite a lot of interest already.

"The reaction about the name is quite mixed. A lot of people who aren't into Gerry don't really know that is his new song.

"A lot of people are also asking if that is who it is called after."

Glasgow Times:

Geo is one of the many from Castlemilk who has supported Gerry from his humbling beginnings playing small venues around the city.

Gerry was born and raised in Castlemilk and has become one of the UK's biggest artists playing festivals and touring across the country. His latest single Canter hit the number one spot in Scotland and he is due to headline the Hydro for the first time later this year.

He said: "I know Gerry from when I was a young boy. He has done great, he has big following up here in Castlemilk, we all go to his concerts."

Geo has also promised to play Gerry's music in the takeaway and if the singer shows up, he might even get some free food or a dish named after him.

Canter is hoping to have a soft opening next week. It will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner with pizza and pasta just some of the options on the menu. The takeaway is based in 12 Glenwood Business Centre.
