FIT for the stars of the future - that's the ethos behind Glasgow's newest school.

Riverbank Primary opens its doors today on the site of the Athlete's Village... and education bosses hope the legacy of the site rubs off on the future of the school.

With 180 pupils from P1 to P7, the school is a much-anticipated development for the local community.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, City Convener for Education, Skills and Early Years, said: “This is a wonderful new school and many new memories will be made in the bright and welcoming classrooms.

“This is an exciting development for the local community and what a lovely legacy of the 2014 Games as the school is built on the site of the athlete’s village.

“I predict many stars of the future will be Riverbank pupils – as they have an amazing school to flourish in.”

The £15 million school was built to fill a gap in provision for the new East End community at the former Athlete's Village.

Construction of a new build primary school was needed to address increased demand from growing population in Commonwealth Village and surrounding catchment.

With space for 315 pupils there is still room to grow.

And head teacher Tommy Hynes knows the area well, having come from the nearby Dalmarnock Primary School.

Riverbank, which was named after a competition requesting suggestions from the community, has 12 full time teaching classrooms.

It also has two general purpose rooms, a health and wellbeing room, a sensory room and an Inspiring Learning Space Media Library.

Youngsters will also benefit from an amphitheatre seating space, which has a drop down projector screen for showing films.

There is a raised drama and stage space, a shared multi-purpose gym and dining hall, and flexible break out areas with equipment for cooking.

Outside the school has a multi-surface play space with a walled garden area and a seven-a-side 3G pitch.

Primary and nursery pupils from Dalmarnock helped design inspiring areas throughout the school.

There are little nook areas with interesting quotes and graphics to liven them up.

Teachers plan to have pupils help liven up the media library with art and design while plans for the school garden include working with neighbouring Riverside Care Home to design the outdoor space.

And the school has a very special mural featuring a frequent visitor to the primary.

During construction works, builders would come in to find fox paw prints in the concrete surfaces from an overnight visitor.

The fox has now been immortalised in the painting.

While Glasgow pupils returned to school on Wednesday, Riverbank pupils had two extra days off, returning to class today, to give teachers time to prepare their classrooms.
