A DESIGNER coat worth £1,400 is among some of the expensive items donated to a new Inverclyde charity shop.

Staff and volunteers at the new Chest Heart and Stroke shop in Kilmacolmsay they have been inundated with designer goods since the boutique opened a few weeks ago.

Others include an Yves Saint Laurent shirt, a Tony Burch handbag and an Armani scarf.

Our sister title The Greenock Telegraph reports that Kirsty Stronach, the shop manager, says local people have been very generous.

She said: "We have had a very lovely reception from the local community.

"It has been brilliant, it really has.

"If anything, we are getting busier each week so it has completely surpassed our expectations.

"We are starting to get a lot of donations from the community.

"Someone handed in a blue Burberry mac worth £1,400 and we sold it for £125.

"It might seem a lot for a charity shop but the coat was in immaculate condition.

"We also had a lovely Viola gold jacket which was Chanel inspired which was worth about £150.

"We're selling it for £29.95 as it's in perfect condition."

Kirsty said that each and every item that comes into the shop is thoroughly checked before it is sold on.

She added: "We check things four times, we have a process.

"Everything is in immaculate condition."

The shop currently has 10 volunteers but Kirsty is encouraging more people to help out.

She said: "We have 10 volunteers but we're aiming for about 20.

"We have a mix of retired people and students but obviously with the summer holidays coming to an end, some of them will be going back to school, college or university.

"So anyone who could volunteer for a few hours each week can pop into the shop and we can give them an application pack and arrange a wee shift to see if they like it."

Kirsty is keen to thank the community for supporting the shop so far.

She said: "Its been fantastic, it really has.

"Thanks to everyone for their ongoing support.

"It makes a huge difference to the charity."
