THERE are just days left to have your say on whether lap dancing clubs in Glasgow should be licensed.

The council’s consultation on licensing of sexual entertainment venues (SEVs) closes next Monday.

The evidence submitted during the 12-week consultation will be used by councillors to decide on whether or not to introduce a separate licence for the clubs.

If it does it will also decide how many licences there should be in the city, putting a cap on the number of lap dancing clubs.

It could decide to set the number at zero which would effectively ban lap dancing clubs in Glasgow.

The owners and operators of the existing clubs in Glasgow along with a range of organisations including, employees, police, the GMB sex workers union and Glasgow Violence against Women Partnership were contacted to ask for their views.

Some want the clubs licenced or banned arguing it is exploitation of women and contributes to violence against women while others argue it is a legitimate occupation and staff have a right to work in a properly regulated industry.

The consultation is looking at if there are connections between SEVs and issues such as public nuisance, crime and disorder, public safety and violence against women.

Councillor Alex Wilson, Chair of the Licensing and Regulatory Committee, said: “With the consultation closing on August 26 we are now down to wire for receiving responses to the consultation. Anyone with a stake in the issue of sexual entertainment venues in Glasgow who has still to contribute to consultation should make their submission without delay.

“At the outset the consultation period was extended to twelve weeks to ensure everyone with an interest in the issue had the maximum amount of time to make their views known.

“The committee has invited responses to the consultation from a wide range of groups and organisations who they would understand to be invested in the issue in some way. But this is a public consultation and so it is open to anyone and everyone who wishes to make a response.”

Submissions must be with the Licensing Department by the close of business on Monday, August 26, 2019.
