A couple celebrated their wedding with a Buckfast-themed cake, and necked their favourite booze straight out the bottle.

Kelly Robertson, 36, and Steven Ball, 38, share a love of the highly caffeinated tonic wine - as long as it's been kept in the fridge.

The couple, who have two sons, decided to inject some humour into their wedding day when they tied the knot in a civil ceremony.

Glasgow Times:

Glamorous Kelly bucked tradition when she walked down the aisle dressed in a black gown, to AC/DC’s Back in Black.

But when they went to the reception, in a rugby club, they were astonished to see their wedding cake - which had been bought as a gift by Kelly’s sisters.

Glasgow Times:

From the front, it looked like a traditional wedding cake clad in white icing decorated with icing flowers, silver ribbon and a ‘Mr & Mrs’ sign on top.

But turned around, the white icing parted over dark green icing, featuring three edible Buckfast labels.

Glasgow Times:

And two Buckfast miniatures topped off the cake - which the couple happily knocked back.

Kelly said: “Myself and my partner really like Buckfast and I joked that we should get a Buckfast cake.

“My sisters just laughed it off, but they went away and spoke to a lady and said she could make a Buckfast cake.

“I was like ‘no way, go for it’.”

She thought it was a bit of a laugh, but was thrilled when big sisters Alix Docherty and Nikki Robertson came through on their promise.

Project worker Kelly, from Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, added: “I never saw the cake until we got to the reception after the service.

“At first it just looked like a wedding cake till we spun it round.

“I was taken aback and blown away by it.”

Glasgow Times:

She said the cake ‘tasted amazing’ - and was suitable for the children at the wedding, on July 27, including her sons Joshua, 14, and Joseph, aged six.

Kelly added: “One of my sisters joked about putting Buckfast through it, but we’ve got a lot of kids in my family so I said ‘don’t’.

“I said ‘that lot are mad enough, they don’t need Buckfast’.”

Her husband, who works as a civil engineer, shares Kelly’s unconventional sense of humour.

Kelly said: “Steven loved it as well.

“The two of us like Buckfast and he was right up for it.

“It's an acquired taste but it’s got to come from the fridge.

“I do like my classic rock music too.

“Steven and I have our own way of doing things.

“It injected a good bit of humour into the day.”
