A heartbroken family will bring home their own little superhero to die after doctors told them they can do no more to prolong his life.

Brave Sean Smith, 5, has been battling the condition Hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid in the brain, most of his life and now his fight is about to come to an end as his family waits for doctors at the Royal Hospital for Children to give them the go-ahead to take him home.

His condition, which causes increased pressure in the skull, recently took a turn for the worse after he got an infection. Doctors have tragically said keeping him alive will only prolong his pain.

Now mum Pamela, dad Sean and brother Daniel, 2, will prepare to say their final goodbyes to little fighter Sean who has been described by his entire family as a true superhero.

Cousin Sharon Smith said: "We have no words, we didn't expect this. He has been through a lot worse and been through major surgery.

"He wasn't well, they took him to the doctors and an infection was discovered."

She added: "He is a wee cheery soul, he is the life and soul of everywhere he goes.

"He is an upbeat wee boy even though he has been through so much."

Sharon's sister Maggie has set up a crowdfunding JustGiving Page to help the devastated family with funeral costs.

In a post on the page, Maggie said: "This JustGiving page is to raise as much as we can to give wee Sean the best possible send-off any superhero deserves.

"Wee Sean has been through more in his five small years than probably most of us ever will in a lifetime.

"Let's all come together to get this little superhero his send off and take some pressure off this amazing family and let them spend the last of their precious time with wee Sean."

More than £1,500 has been raised for the family so far.
