A prison officer shot at in an attempted murder in Bearsden has reportedly quit his job after feeling pressured to return 'too quickly'.

Gary Chambers was the target of a horrifying dawn doorstep shooting in June.

It emerged the 38-year-old worked for private justice company Sodexo, who operate HMP Addiewell near Livingston.

And now, Mr Chambers has reportedly walked out of his job at the prison due to lack of support shown for himself and his family, according to the Scottish Sun.

It is understood he told colleagues he felt 'pressured' to return to the job too quickly amid a staffing crisis.

He also allegedly accused bosses of failing to support him and his family after the attempted murder.

An insider revealed to the Sun that he told friends he would not be returning to the prison.

They said: “Gary felt pressured into coming back to work as soon as possible because there are staff shortages.

“And since he has been back he is frustrated with what’s viewed as a lack of support for him and his family from the bosses.

“Things came to a head-on Monday and he had a bust-up with Ian Whitehead and walked out.

“It’s all come as a shock as it came out of the blue and everyone in the jail is talking about it.

“He will be a huge loss to the bosses as he was a good officer who is respected by other staff and the inmates.”

We reported in June that Mr Chambers was the intended target of the attack, and neighbours were awoken to the sound of two gunshots at 5.30am.
