RUTH Davidson has said putting her family first is behind her reason to resign as Scottish Conservative leader.

In her resignation letter, sent the day after Boris Johnson got approval to suspend parliament in order to prevent MPs blocking a no deal Brexit, she said life has changed since the birth of her son, Finn.

Ms Davidson has been a vocal critic of Mr Johnson particularly during the EU Referendum campaign and did not support him for the Tory leadership.

Ms Davidson, without mentioning the Prime Minister by name, admitted to conflict over Brexit but said the reason for quitting was family.

She said the prospect of another General election and then Scottish Election in 2021 “fills me with dread” at having to be away from her family for months.

She said: I have to be honest that where the idea of getting on the road to fight two elections in 20 months would once have fired me up, the threat of spending hundreds of hours away from my home and family now fills me with dread. That is no way to lead.”

She said: “The arrival of my son means I now make a different choice.”

She ended her letter by stating “I will continue to support he party, the Prime Minister and Scotland’s place in the United Kingdom from the backbenches and beyond.”
