A MAN has been taken to hospital following a ‘large scale disturbance’ in Govanhill.

Police were called to Butterbiggins Road at 1.15pm yesterday afternoon to reports of a man being injured during the disturbance near a mosque were funeral had been taking place.

Emergency services attended at the scene and the man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around this incident and the area is cordoned off as officers continue their enquiries.”

A number of members from the community had gathered and left cars unattended parked around the police cordons.

Two police cars were at a cordon at the scene and a number of policemen were standing outside the mosque.

The whole of Butterbiggins Road was closed off.

A member of the public was in his car outside the mosque and had attended the funeral earlier in the day, where the man was stabbed.

He said: “We were at the funeral then people came here and stabbed a man. They weren’t at the funeral.

“I understand they had an issue with the man who was stabbed. I was told he has been operated on now. And he is stable."

The eyewitness said the victim was stabbed at the bottom and he staggered down the whole length of the street.

He added: "It happened in the middle of the road.

“I didn’t see it but there were people at the funeral who saw it.”
