A YOUNG Scot on a stag-do in Ibiza is in a coma after he was struck with just one punch.

Gavin Robertson, 26, was randomly punched in the head while at an ATM in the Spanish party island's resort San Antonio on Tuesday night.

His devastated mum told the Daily Record a man approached him from behind and punched him in the side of the head before running off.

The Stewarton lad sustained a fractured skull, as well as bleeding and bruising on his brain. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and has been in a coma ever since.

Kirsty, who has flown to Ibiza to be at her son's side with her sister Paula, told the newspaper: "We've been told the first five days are critical and he's going to be up and down.

"Right now Gavin is stable, that's all they are telling me. We don't know if or when he will wake or what lasting damage his injuries will have on him.

'We're all heartbroken and are just hoping for the best possible outcome. At the moment we're taking every day as it comes."

Electrician Gavin was due to fly home the following morning.

Kirsty added: "As far as I'm aware they had been having a great time. They hadn't had any problems with anyone. I'm told what happened was totally random. They were out on a night out and he went to the cash machine and the worst thing happened.

"When I received a message to tell me what happened on Wednesday morning I thought it was a joke at first. I couldn't believe it.  I just booed a flight straight away. Getting on that plane and having to switch my phone off was horrendous. I had a horrible feeling I was going to get the worst news when I switched it back on."

A fundraising campaign has collected more than £15,000 since it was set up for Gavin who had no insurance.

Kirsty said: "I don't know he didn't have insurance. He's a grown man now. I didn't think I had to remind him about that.

"There's nothing we can do about it now. We just have to look at other ways to help. I'm told it's not the medicals bills that will be the problem, it will be his flight home if he needs medical assistance that could cost us tens of thousands.

"I'd like thank everyone who has already donated. We have been overwhelmed with the support and well-wishes."
