A NEW distribution facility could be built in the city's East End.

Planning permission is being sought by Hermiston Securities for the project in Glasgow Business Park near the M8.

Hermiston Securities bought the land last year and say an operator approached them to locate a new large distribution facility on the site.

A planning statement said: "The proposal is for a large distribution facility with external delivery and dispatch areas and additional van storage bays.

"The building also incorporates office, catering and welfare facilities for staff.

"Goods are brought to the site typically by HGV, these being unloaded via dock levellers in the HGV yard. The goods are sorted inside the building and dispatched to delivery vans for their onward journey to their destination.

"Vehicle movements around the site are carefully controlled to avoid clashes, with one-way systems rigorously enforced and HGV, van and car uses segregated.

The statement added: "The proposal is to develop a large distribution facility on land at Glasgow Business Park which has been vacant for a number of years.

"The building and external areas will be designed and constructed to a high standard and will satisfy a definite requirement for an operator with a particular requirement - this is not a speculative venture.

"Driven by the operator's requirements, the development is programmed to start on site in late 2019 and be delivered for occupation and fit out in late 2020.

"We believe this is a proposal which is appropriate and delivers a significant investment which will help kick start the development of the remainder of Glasgow Business Park."

The proposal does not reveal who the likely occupier will be.

The last date for comments is September 30 and a decision is expected on the plans by December 20.
