MORE than 1800 people have backed a petition calling on the council to re-instate a Glasgow taxi driver's licence.

Kenny Clark has been banned from the roads for six months following an alleged dispute with female passenger after he is said to have driven her to the wrong bank.

The 29-year-old woman has since been charged with assault on the driver as well as vandalism.

Police did not pursue any action against him. Meanwhile, hundreds of people have backed a petition calling on the council to reinstate his licence.

The petition has been backed by 1,805 signatures so far.

The incident was filmed by a member of the public and councillors who viewed it agreed his licence should be suspended.

Well known Glasgow cabbie Stef Shaw is among those who have shared the petition on social media, branding the suspension “badly wrong”.

He said: “I know Kenny Clark to be a good decent citizen of Glasgow and the man is distraught at this decision against him.

"I’ve signed this petition because I believe that Glasgow City Council licensing authority has called this decision badly wrong.”

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “Based on all of the information presented at the hearing on this case, the committee felt it was necessary and appropriate to suspend the driver’s licence with immediate effect.

“The committee concluded that the licence holder’s conduct had fallen short of what is expected of a taxi driver.

“The licence holder has the right to appeal."
