WORKERS in Govan are set to protest outside a city supermarket over contract changes that could see staff lose out on hundreds of pounds every year.

A national campaign by trade union GMB will include a demonstration outside ASDA Govan on Helen Street to challenge new working conditions.

Across the UK, the supermarket giant have put forward contract changes to workers, with those who do not sign up facing the sack.

The company has told workers they must sign the so-called 'flexible' Contract 6 - which will see them lose all their paid breaks and forced to work bank holidays – or be sacked on November 2.

Pay will rise from £8.21 an hour to £9 in return for the changes with an 18 month transition period for anyone worse off.

Many GMB members say the contract is forcing them to choose between caring for vulnerable relatives or losing their jobs in the run up the Christmas.

Workers across the country will now turn out at their local ASDA stores, with a demonstration set for outside the Govan shop.

Gary Carter, GMB national officer, said: “Asda workers already feel like they are being treated like dirt over this damaging new contract.

“By imposing this new contract with the contractual changes it brings, Asda are forcing people to choose between looking after their disabled son, elderly mother or vulnerable wife and losing their job – it’s just not right."

Today's protests follow action taken in August which reportedly saw more than 1,000 ASDA workers gather in Leeds against the new contracts.

Now, ahead of the latest demonstrations, GMB claim ASDA is 'punishing' staff with the controversial new conditions, which would take away sick pay.

Mr Carter added: “Now they are being punished again – if they stand up for their rights, do not sign up to the inferior terms, Asda have said they won't get their contractual sick pay.

“We’re calling on Asda to respect its workforce and offer dedicated, long-serving staff a better deal.”

In August, ASDA refused a meeting with seven Glasgow MPs who had raised concerns about the proposed contract changes.

All seven Glasgow MPs signed a letter saying discussions revealed an “unnecessary heavy hand on the part of Asda".

The politicians said that the conditions would leave many “lagging behind” others in the retail industry, calling the contract offer "derisory".

Responding to the protests ASDA have said the "overwhelming majority" of staff have signed up to the new contract and that many other retailers have made similar moves in recent years.

An Asda spokesperson added:“The retail sector is immensely competitive and it is important that we are able to serve our customers in the best way to meet their needs.

"This contract is about increasing the take-home pay of more than 100,000 retail colleagues, through an investment of more than £80m, and ensuring that everyone doing the same job is on the same terms and conditions.

“The overwhelming majority of our colleagues from across all our stores, including in Govan, have signed onto the new contracts and while we appreciate that some of our colleagues find the changes more unsettling, we do not want any of them to leave.

"We understand colleagues have commitments outside of work and will not be asking them to constantly move the time they work, their days or departments.

"There is no difference to sick pay entitlements for colleagues serving their notice period as part of the contract changes."
