A HEARTBROKEN community in mourning has worn blue to pay tribute to tragic schoolboy Daniel McDermott.

They turned out for the funeral of the much-loved 12-year-old today by following a family request to wear his favourite colour.

Daniel was playing on a railway bridge near Ashgill Road on August 18 when he came into contact with overhead powerlines.

He was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition but lost his fight almost a week later on August 24.  His funeral mass took place at St Augustine’s Church in Milton.

Mourners started arriving at the church just after 8.30am wearing different shades of blue for the 9.30am service.

Cars lined Ashgill Road and surrounding streets showing a community in unity over the tragedy.

Daniel’s friends clutched their parent’s hands as they tried to come to terms with their grief while men and women choose subtle navy blue to show their respect.

Tragically the spot where Daniel's accident happened is just across the street from where his friends and family were preparing to say their final goodbye.

The family had previously requested that mourners did not bring flower tributes.

They asked that a donation was made to a GoFundMe page which is raising funds for the children’s ICU department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. More than £2,900 has been raised so far.

In earlier tributes, Daniel’s family described him as a ‘loving and caring’ boy.

A statement by the family previously said: “Daniel was our precious boy and we are all heartbroken by his sudden and tragic death.

"He was a loving and caring boy, everyone he knew loved him and he had so many friends.

"He used to always say he was going on an adventure; we cannot imagine life without him, he will be so sorely missed.  “We are all broken by the loss of our little boy.”
