A CYCLIST from Glasgow has been crowned the fastest male Devlieroo rider in the UK.

Strathclyde university student Aidan Quinn, 24 – who last month won the Scottish heat – has seen off the rest of the field at the grand final of Deliveroo's Rider Races.

He was among 30 cyclists who gathered at the iconic Olympic Velodrome in London, having qualified through regional heats held across the country.

Spurred on by the hundreds of spectators, Aidan Quinn completed the quickest lap, pedalling around the 250 metre circuit in a rapid time of 16.032 seconds to become Deliveroo’s fastest male rider. Aidan is currently studying civil engineering at Strathclyde University, and is no stranger to cycling achievements. The day before the final he came second in the Scottish Time Trial Championships with his cycling team, and just a few weeks ago he spent a fortnight cycling 2,500km from Alicante to London. He was also previously a member of the Junior Scottish National Cycling Team.

Manchester student John Brett and Nottingham’s Edward Gray couldn’t be separated over the distance, finishing joint second in a time of 16.056 seconds.

By finishing in the top three, the riders each won a brand new bike from event sponsor Halfords, as well as a cash prize. All 30 finalists have also earned a place in the sportive at the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire and Aidan was given with VIP tickets and a behind the scenes tour of the Championships.

The final was the culmination of nine regional heats in Manchester, York, Bournemouth, Brighton, London, Cardiff, Glasgow and Dublin, with over 150 riders taking part to stake their claim as Deliveroo’s fastest rider.

Aidan said: "I knew that if I emptied the tank I’d be in with a chance. The crowd made such a difference - they really carry you and when you hear them you’re able to dig in to get to the finish line."

BBC Olympic Games and Match of the Day commentator Simon Brotherton, who commentated on the Deliveroo Rider Races final said: "I was blown away by the standard of competition. It was fantastic to see every rider approach the race with the same focus and energy as an Olympic final, and well done to Aidan for a well-deserved victory."
