Glasgow-born actor Peter Capaldi is confirmed to appear in the Suicide Squad reboot scheduled for a 2021 release. 

Director James Gunn announced the full cast for the new edition of the DC supervillain film on Twitter.

The star-studded list also featured John Cena, Pete Davidson, Nathan Filion and Idris Elba amongst others.

Known for his role in Doctor Who and The Thick of It, the film will be Peter Capaldi's first role within the superhero cinema universe.

However, the characters that the cast will be playing are yet to be announced, leaving Capaldi's role a matter of speculation. 

The tweet also confirmed the return of Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney who are expected to reappear in their former roles.

Margot Robbie is reprising her Harley Quinn role, Jai Courtney will return as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Viola Davis as the squad’s handler, Amanda Waller.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad will not be a sequel to the 2016 film but will offer a new adaptation of the story after the critical flop of the first film.

Jared Leto and Will Smith will not be reappearing in their roles of the Joker and Deadshot respectively.
