SHEYI OJO has no doubt midfield general Steven Davis will continue to lead by example on and off the park for Rangers this term.

The Northern Irishman produced another superb showing on Saturday as he inspired the Light Blues to a commanding 5-0 victory over Aberdeen.

Davis has started the campaign in terrific form for Steven Gerrard’s side and Ojo is confident the Gers will continue to reap the rewards of that influence in the coming weeks and months.

He said: “If I had to give him a nickname I would probably call him The General. Because he just knows everything – where the ball is going to be and he really dictates the game.

“As soon as gets the ball I can make my runs to try and create chances for the team.

“He is a really important player and has shown throughout the season how good he is. We are really delighted to have him.

“He is one of the main leaders in the squad. We have a few leaders in there but Steven is certainly among them.

“His influence is there on the pitch even more so. He dictates the tempo of the game and really takes charge of that midfield. It is just a great pleasure for everyone to play alongside him.

“He came off in this one in the second half to get a rest but he is such an important player. Everyone can see the effect he has on the team every time he plays.

“Not only through his performances but also in the experience he brings from his first spell at the club. He’s a vital player.”

Rangers moved to within one point of Celtic in the Premiership title race thanks to a brace of penalties from James Tavernier and strikes from Greg Stewart, Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.

It was Davis that took home the Man of the Match champagne, though, and boss Gerrard was full of praise for the way the 34-year-old controlled the game from the middle of the park.

Now Ojo hopes Davis can do that once again as the Gers prepare for their second Europa League Group G encounter against Young Boys on Thursday night.

Ojo said: “He will be massively important. When you are away from home, you have to play a different type of game. It is not always going to be attacking.

“The midfield will be asked to do a different type of job at times and he is one of the most important players who can do that. He will be a big player for us in the Europa League.

“You also know he will get us going forward with his passing at the right times. He put me in with a great pass in the first half here.

“It’s a credit to the staff [that we can play different styles]. We work hard in training on different tactics for different opposition.

“In European games especially, we have to play a different style of football at times.

“We have shown we can do both sides of the game and that will be needed against Young Boys.

“If we play to our strengths and play to our ability we can get the three points.”
