SCOTT ARFIELD reckons he is at the peak of his powers as he looks to play an integral part in a successful season for Rangers.

The midfielder has become one of Steven Gerrard’s most trusted performers since making the move to Ibrox last summer.

He missed the start of the campaign with the Light Blues after captaining Canada in their ultimately unsuccessful bid to win the Gold Cup.

But his form since returning to Glasgow has rarely dipped and he has two goals from 15 appearances for Gerrard’s side.

And Arfield is confident he has plenty more to give over the coming weeks and months at Ibrox.

“I feel physically that I am at my peak,” he told the Rangers Matchday Programme. “I’ve never been the fastest and I’ve never been the sharpest, but my running feels consistent and in terms of my fitness I’d say this is my peak.

“I look after myself better than I ever have in my career, so I feel just now I am at that time where I really have to look after myself and put the mileage in for the team and for myself to make this the most successful part of my career.

“I think that comes all the way back to pre-season - and not even in this season but the season before when I went on record and said it was the toughest pre-season I had ever done as a player. I then had the Gold Cup with Canada in the summer and came back a little bit later, but when I came back you could see the fitness levels and the intensity of the players was already instilled in them.

“You don’t want to do it as it is tough on your legs and tough on you mentally, but those first two months really set you up for the rest of the season and, as the season goes on, we will really see the true benefit of it.”
