STEVEN GERRARD has enlisted the help of former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz as he looks to guide Rangers to European victory over Young Boys this evening.

The Swiss saw his Sion side lose 3-2 at the Stade de Suisse on Saturday as Young Boys kept up the pace with league leaders Basle.

Rangers are now next on the agenda for Gerardo Seoane’s side and a victory is a must for the hosts if they are to avoid losing further ground in Group G following an opening matchday loss to Porto a fortnight ago.

Gerrard played alongside Henchoz for six years at Anfield and has used that relationship to his advantage to get the inside track on his next Europa League foes.

Gerrard said: “We obviously covered the game at the weekend when they lost 3-2 and it was an interesting match. I think it summed Young Boys up, really. They score heavily, they have got some goal scorers in the team and they are an exciting team going forward. But, at the same time, you have show the right quality against them then you can cause them problems as well. It is going to be an interesting game.”

Victory over Feyenoord at Ibrox gave Rangers the perfect start in Group G and they have travelled to Bern in fine form after a fifth successive victory on Saturday as they beat Aberdeen 5-0 in the Premiership.

The Light Blues have suffered just two defeats in 23 games on the continent on Gerrard’s watch and the 39-year-old is confident his side can rise to the occasion one again.

Gerrard said: “This is a top stadium in Europe and the level we’ve worked so hard throughout the qualifiers to get to. I’ve said it before, when you sit down with players they want to be part of this club because it can offer European football.

“That can’t just be to sightsee or have one or two experiences.

“We have to try and achieve things in the tournament and I think it would be a wonderful achievement if we could get out of this group. That’s got to be the bigger picture for everybody. It’s early days yet.

“We’ve started well and there are tough points up for grabs here. We want to fight for them all.”
