A teenager has died after a three-car crash near to Airdrie.

Emergency services were called to A73 Stirling Road near to Dykehead Road shortly before 1.15pm on Sunday.

The driver of a black Volkswagen Polo, an 18-year-old man, died following a collision with two other vehicles - a Seat Leon and a Vauxhall Insignia.

A male passenger from the Polo suffered non-life threatening injuries in the collision and was taken to Monklands Hospital.

The occupants of the other two vehicles were also taken to Monklands Hospital as a precaution.

Sergeant Simon Reilly of Police Scotland's Road Policing Unit said: "We are supporting the man's family and friends at this difficult time.

"We are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the collision and we would urge anyone with information who has not yet spoken to a police officer to come forward as soon as possible."

They are urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident 1922 of October 6.
