Amazon has vowed to fight eviction from one of its biggest Scottish bases.

The online shopping giant - by some measures the world's largest company - was earlier this year told to quit its warehouse in Gourock.

The company unsuccessfully sued its landlord, saying it had not been given enough notice. It was told in February it had until August to get out.

Amazon has now confirmed that it will appeal a decision by the Court of Session upholding the eviction, arguing that it should be allowed to stay for another year.

A spokesperson said: “It’s business as usual for our customers and associates and we will be appealing the court decision.”

Amazon employs around 300 people at its Gourock "fulfilment centre". BBC Scotland cited insiders saying the legal action was a high-stakes negotiation over rent. The company's 15-year lease ran out in August.

The site is now owned by a huge property inverstment firm called M7. It used to belong to jobs quango Scottish Enterprise and it is claimed the rent is well below current market rates.

Both M7 and Amazon are large operastors with substantial legal and negotiating muscle. John Murnaghan, head of UK and Ireland real estate for M7, told BBC Scotland: "We're here to engage constructively and proactively with Amazon over this lease. However, we need to ensure we're getting fair value for our investors."
