A GROUP has gathered in Glasgow’s George Square this afternoon to show the 'city’s solidarity' with the people of Hong Kong.
People turned out in support of a demonstration organised by Democracy for Hong Kong in Scotland, and the square filled with people from 3 pm.
They were calling for Hong Kong to remain separate from China, and carried signs and banners to 'show their unity and raise global awareness'.
Police Scotland officers were also in attendance at the gathering and it is understood that counter-protesters are at the scene.
The region has been gripped with violent protests for the last four months after controversial legislation was enforced to extradite criminals to mainland China and Taiwan.
Rally organisers described the situation in the region as one of its "greatest humanitarian crisis".
Speaking before the demonstration, they said: “The path towards democracy and freedom is beset on all sides with the tyranny of evil men.
“No matter what lies ahead, Hong Kongers would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.
“We ask you, whether you're from Hong Kong or not, to support and stand in solidarity with the people of Hong Kong.”
