A popular Shawlands bar is preparing for a new chapter in its history after passing into new ownership.

The Butterfly and the Pig South opened in the historic former Corona pub in 2015 as an offshoot of the original bar and restaurant in the city centre, quickly becoming a favoured haunt for hundreds of locals.

However, owner Michelle Paglocca has now announced the bar has been signed over to Southside local Catriona Broadhurst to “secure the future of the venue”.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the owners said they had “never even considered” giving up the bar, but admitted the opportunity to focus on other venues across the city, including nightclub The Shed, located next to the pub, was too good to refuse.

The statement read: “The offer to take on this iconic building was one we felt we could not refuse, especially considering we own the neighbouring building which houses our nightclub, The Shed. At that time it felt like the perfect opportunity to expand our brand and further invest in the future of Shawlands, a part of Glasgow that we have always had a soft spot for.

Five years on and the soft spot has never hardened, Shawlands continues to evolve and grow as an exciting and vibrant place to live, work and relax.

“We have worked with Catriona and her husband for many years as the leaseholder of some of our other businesses. When they first approached us about taking on the pub it was not something we had ever considered, but after careful consideration we are well assured and excited knowing the future of our beloved venue will continue to be a success while allowing us our own opportunity to re-invest our attention into some of our other sites such as The Shed, which now operates a much broader entertainment offering than it did five years ago including; live music, comedy, theatre, interactive dining experiences, wrestling fitness bootcamp and on one occasion a wedding venue.”

“We are also exploring opportunities to expand our growing brands such as Singl-end Cafe & Bakehouse and other exciting projects in the future.”

A £200,000 refurbishment was carried out on the Corona building before the pub opened, with work undertaken to restore the Edwardian building’s original features.

The ornate bar was designed by architect J.H. Craigie and commissioned by spirit merchant James O’Malley in 1912.

The statement added: “Our chapter in this beautiful space has come to the end, but we are delighted that the story continues.”

“As one family owned business is handed over to another, we wish the new team every success for the future and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make The butterfly and the pig South possible. Every band that graced on our stage, dog that enjoyed a biscuit, team that struggled through Gordon’s tough quizzes, couple that dried their jackets by the the coal fire, movie buff that joined us for a cinema night and family that celebrated something special with us.

“But most of all we want to thank our amazing staff. We hope that before 1039 Pollokshaws Road starts a new and exciting chapter that you have the chance to join us for a drink, a bowl of our award winning Mac & Cheese and a boogie in front of the stag.”
