Late 1800s

Allan Watt starts a venture selling lace and ribbons later opening a shop in Elmbank Street, Glasgow.

1915

Watt Brothers is formed and the company moves into premises on Sauchiehall Street.

1929

The store is expanded to six floors and on to Bath Street designed by famous architect’s Keppie and Henderson.

1939

Allan Watt dies and control of the company is assumed by his son William.

1950s

and 1960s

The firm expands with a second shop in Clarkston.

1993

William Watt, the current owner, takes over running the business as managing director aged 26.

1990s and 2000s

Watt Brothers expands further afield in Scotland with stores in Ayr, Hamilton Lanark and Livingston.

2014-2016

More new stores open in retail parks in Robroyston, Irvine and Falkirk.

2016

The 11th Watt Brothers store opens in Port Glasgow.

2018

Reports of a possible sale of the Sauchiehall street store amid news the firm suffered a loss of £750,000 on sales of more than £21million.

October 2019

Watt Brothers enters administration as stores close their doors.
