Christmas is coming early for Glasgow newborns as registration for Glasgow Loves Christmas’ beloved event opens tomorrow.

This year 1000 babies from the Glasgow area will take part in Baby’s First Christmas on December 7 where they will receive a personalised scroll, a silver Newbridge Christmas decoration for their Christmas tree and a polar bear toy. The first 250 registered will also have the chance to meet the Lord Provost at the City Chambers.

Registration opens at 9am for two weeks or until all 1000 places have been filled. Babies must be under a year old and live within the Glasgow City Council boundary to be eligible.

Lord Provost Eva Bolander said: “Baby’s First Christmas is a wonderful celebration for Glasgow’s newest citizens that will build memories for their families that will last forever.

"It’s an absolute privilege to be able to meet these young Glaswegians, their parents and siblings and be a part of their first Christmas together.”

The traditional event has seen thousands of Glasgow babies since 2005 and is jointly sponsored by Glasgow City Council and St Enoch Centre. It is part of the city’s Glasgow Loves Christmas celebrations that run from November 17 to Hogmanay.

Other events include the Style Mile Carnival on November 24 and a Santa Dash on December 8, which last year saw thousands of runners depart from George Square dressed as Santa Claus.

Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of St Enoch Centre, said: “Christmas is such a magical time of year and we’re looking forward to celebrating with Glasgow’s youngest residents as they enjoy their first festive season. Baby’s First Christmas is a truly special event in the city and we’re proud to be part of such a memorable experience.”
