Police in California are probing the death of the US army veteran son of a Scottish millionaire after his body was discovered wrapped in tarpaulin in the boot of a car.

Highway patrol officers found Adrian Bonar as they prepared to tow the abandoned Lexus by the side of the road in Anaheim - over 70 miles from his home in Escondido.

Detectives are now investigating the incident after the 34-year-old son of Greenock-born restaurant boss Dr Brian Bonar was laid to rest in a coffin draped with the stars and stripes on Monday.

Adrian, who was born in California after Brian and wife Linda Green emigrated to San Diego, served at least two tours in Iraq with American forces before being honorably discharged.

His sister Pauline Gourdie posted a tribute online as mum Linda, from Stewarton in Ayrshire, flew out for the service in the city.

Pauline, from Gourock, wrote: “My wee brother, my twin 14 years apart. How I loved you and I know you loved me back.”

“My heart is breaking, yet bursting with pride that you were my brother. It’s clear you were not only loved by your family but by so many whose life you touched.

“You were taken too soon but by gawd did you live it.”

She added: “May you soar with the eagles in heaven while they squawk in the sewers of hell. Until we meet again. Sleep tight lil bro. Your heartbroken sis, P.”

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral where a picture of Adrian in full Highland dress was displayed.

The Sun reported friends also wore thistles in tribute to his Scottish roots.

A spokesperson for Anaheim police said: “Homicide detectives have identified the man found left in the trunk of a car as Adrian Darren Bonar, 34 years old from Escondido.”
